I use the trees on both sides to add depth to this picture as well as using negative space to add a meaning for the positive space in the flag and why it is the center of the picture.
I also use a tilted horizon to create a slight discomfort with the photo to illustrate the idea of feeling multiple emotions while looking at this flag to express true feeling toward the American Flag.

The light of the sun reflecting off of the ocean gives the photo multiple sources of light rather than just the sun so it fills the photo with enough light and it helps show the waves in the water by using the shadows as well.
